The Tobey Take: 2016 Ram Trucks

TOBEY AUTO GROUP – Ram Trucks – We’re truck people, here at Tobey Auto. And we want to be in our new trucks – not endlessly researching them.

With The Tobey Take, we’re here to help you get off the internet and on the road. We’ve done the homework, rounded up the reviews of our 2016 line of Ram trucks and added our two cents.

Finally say adios to those truck articles you have pulled up now. (Your internet browser will thank you.) It’s time for The Tobey Take . . .

The 2016 1500

Edmunds: Looking for a half-ton pickup with clever outside-the-box thinking? You’ll want to look closely at the 2016 Ram 1500. A unique coil spring rear suspension gives it the smoothest unloaded ride. And it can still tow your trailer like a champ with its stout Hemi gasoline V8 or torquey turbodiesel V6 engine.

Autotrader: The RAM 1500 delivers one of the best rides we’ve experienced in a full-size pickup to date. The cabin is solid and well insulated from outside noise, and the new seats are supremely supportive.

Cars.com: The Ram 1500 continues to score high marks for value, especially in the Laramie Longhorn, described as having the look and options of a luxury truck for a midrange price.

The Tobey Take: You’ll like the 1500 if you want a comfortable and sophisticated pickup that still does the job in cargo and towing.

The 2016 2500

KBB: How could you not love a truck that can tow up to 15 tons? To put it in context, that’s more than two fully grown male African elephants, or about as heavy a duty as you could expect from an HD pickup.

Consumer Reports: With a coil-spring rear suspension it now has a ride that is more civilized than competing heavy-duty trucks. Chrysler’s powerful 383-hp, 5.7-liter V8 is the standard engine, but you can opt for the torque-rich 6.7-liter Cummins turbodiesel. There is also a 6.4-liter V8. The truck lends itself easily to fifth wheel towing. And, it can be outfitted with snow-plow preparation kit. The Ram 2500 has two rear cameras: one for backing up, another for monitoring what’s in the bed.

Autotrader: The best RAM 2500 for you largely depends on your needs. If you’re a fleet manager looking for a truck with no frills and big capability, there’s the Tradesman. If you want a full-size truck with a high-end interior and all the latest gadgets, check out the Laramie models.

The Tobey Take: You’ll like the 2500 if you want a heavy-duty truck that does it all with class-leading power and towing and superior durability.

The 2016 3500

Edmunds: The 2016 Ram 3500 is a top pick for a heavy-duty truck thanks to its refined, well-equipped interior and astounding towing and hauling capabilities.

KBB: Serious haulers and towers should pick one of the Cummins turbodiesel engines. Two versions of the Cummins inline-6 are available in the 3500, one with 660 lb-ft of torque, and another with 800 lb-ft of torque. New this year is an even higher-output version, exclusive to the 3500, that puts out an incredible 900 lb-ft of torque.

The Tobey Take: You’ll like the 3500 if you want a work vehicle that tackles even the toughest towing and hauling jobs with ease.

The 2016 AEV Prospector

Autoweek: Disconnecting the sway bars and putting it into four-wheel low was easy and from there it crept over any obstacle we could find. The 6.4-liter V8 Hemi seemed to have endless torque from idle on up and the 4.10:1 axle was so low we never even thought about hitting the lockers. The approach and departure angles, aided by the lift, were so steep we never scraped anything, except a little desert pinstriping on the sides of the cab.

Truck Trend: Driving the AEV Prospector is much like piloting a stock truck – and that’s a compliment. The stable ride is welcome both on- and off-road, and the steering response are excellent even with the increased ride height and large tires.

The Tobey Take: You’ll like the AEV Prospector if you want an off-roading truck that will take you from work to play to back home all in one surprisingly smooth ride.
